In this game the visitors experience the principle of normal distribution.

The game consists of a vertical board with interleaved rows of pins. The balls fall from the top, and bounce randomly left and right as they hit the pins. Eventually, they are collected into one-ball-wide bins at the bottom. The game illustrates that distribution follows a certain pattern, also called ‘Normal distribution’: the chance that a ball falls to one side successively is small, therefore the larger amounts of balls will land in the middle of the board.

The machine consists of a vertical board with interleaved rows of pins. Balls are fall from the top, and bounce randomly left and right as they hit the pins, until they eventually are collected into one-ball-wide bins at the bottom.

  1. Turn the wheel and observe how the balls make their way through the maze of slots.
  2. Try it again and see if the amount of balls in the various slots has changed.
