Visitors are challenged to race each other and experiment with different combinations of gears.
This exhibit explores how different pairs of gears cause different speeds. In low range the input gear is small and the output gear is large, resulting in a low speed output with high torque. When the input gear is large and the output gear is small, the result is high speed with low torque.
Why do you change gears in a car to gain more speed?
- Adjust the positioning of the gears to produce the greatest speed.
- Turn the input wheel and watch the result.
- Repeat the experiment again and challenge your friend to a race.
