Wind Tunnel - 2.03

This exhibit demonstrates the aerodynamic quality of 4 types of wings.

The airflow around the wings must be uniform, otherwise the plane will not be stable in flight.

This activity is one of the best ways to learn Daniel Bernoulli’s principles, because it illustrate how the curvature on top of a wing directs airflow down, and produces lift.

Wind tunnels consist of an enclosed structures through which air is pushed by one or more fans. Air flowing through wind tunnels has certain properties of speed and density. Scientists mount models in the wind tunnel’s heart to mimic flight conditions, and to monitor the aircraft’s design ability to hold the various conditions.

  1. Strap on an arm-length wing.
  2. Hold your arm inside the centre of the tunnel.
  3. Change the angle of the wing and feel how it produces lift.
