This exhibit shows the strange, non-intuitive attributes of spinning gyros.
Feel the non-intuitive force of this gyroscope. A visitor stands on a rotating platform and holds a rapidly spinning bicycle wheel by handles attached to the centre hub. As the visitor tips the bicycle wheel to one side, the platform begins to rotate either right or left, depending on the direction the wheel is spinning. Any object that spins will hold to its axis until a force is applied from outside.
- Pick up a wheel by its handles and give it a swing.
- Step on the rotating platform.
- Hold the wheel in front of you
- Hold the wheel slanted to one side.
- See what happens.
