Description
In this exhibit, you can control a model airplane with light. Using the mirror, you aim the light beam at the solar panel on the wings of the airplane. The solar panels convert the light into electricity. This activates the motors, the propellers start spinning, and the airplane moves forward.
Solar panels are increasingly common on the roofs of houses. These panels capture sunlight, which strikes the electrons in the panels, converting it into electricity. Some cars already run on solar power.
Converting light energy into motion is also widely used in aerospace. Solar panels generate electricity for satellites and spacecraft using sunlight.
Solar energy from the sun is a highly sustainable energy source. That’s why a lot of research is being done on it. Researchers are working on flexible and transparent solar cells for use in windows or clothing.
How do you fly with light?
- Sit on the stool to turn on the light.
- Use the mirror to direct the light towards one wing of the airplane.
- Direct the light in such a way that the airplane starts moving.
